3 Key Hashtag Strategies to Market your Business

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 06, 2019

If you are social media savvy then you must be aware of MeToo hashtag that became a movement and dominated every single social media channel. That is the power and impact of using a hashtag today.

You will not find a single social media post that doesn’t include a hashtag. We express our feelings or emotions through these hashtags. You see them on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, and Facebook.

As a marketer, you can’t afford to ignore them. Hashtags can expand your content reach, amplify your brand, target your market, get your content found, improve your SEO, and more. But for that, it is imperative that you know how to use them strategically.

In this article, we will share 3 key digital marketing strategies for hashtags:

1. Brand and Campaign Hashtags

Brand and campaign specific hashtags are tags you use to market your brand and promotions. A brand hashtag defines your business, whereas, a campaign hashtag is created to promote your marketing campaigns. Let’s underrated them better:

Brand hashtags:

A brand hashtag has to be unique that showcases your company in the best light. Do thorough research for the hashtags you think will work on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+ and Facebook before you implement it. It can be your company name or tagline or your motto that is related to your business and most importantly has to be different than others.

For example, KitKat uses a brand hashtag. They use their tagline: #HaveABreak on all their social sites from Twitter to Google+. Their consumers know their brand hashtag, and they use it to engage with the social KitKat community.

Campaign hashtags:

Hashtag campaigns, if done right, can help you maximize your brand’s reach.

For a campaign tag, use the name of your current marketing campaign. It could be a word or a catchy phrase that is unique to your short- term contest or promotion.
Promote your campaign hashtags to engage your customers with you throughout the duration of your special offer. Do some research and take inspiration from other brand’s campaigns that went well.

Take Lays for example; it often uses hashtag campaigns as part of their social media marketing strategy. From their #lifeneedsflavor campaign in 2017 to the currently ongoing #wishflavors campaign, the brand has created several successful hashtag campaigns over the years.

2. Trending Hashtags

A trending hashtag is a hashtag topic that has become a talk of the town.  When you hear people talking about “what’s trending now”, they are often referring to the hashtags that are trending or are the most talked about right now.

Trending hashtags have a limited life and are continuously changing in real time. A top 10 trend can come and go within minutes. When you see a trend that relates to your business, engage in it by using the tag. By using a trending tag in your content update, you can potentially get your message to be seen by a massive audience. Your content update can be seen by more than just your fans and followers, and it’s free. You could think of this strategy as getting your business’ 15 seconds of fame and a platform to reach a larger part of the audience for some of then can become your potential customers.

Note: Beware of spamming trending hashtags. Posting on many trends - particularly when they are unrelated to your business, it is viewed as poor etiquette.  Spamming trends can actually get your Twitter account suspended.

Take inspiration from Oreo as it is known for their real time, trend-catching marketing. They were one of the first brands to tweet about the trending hashtag #SuperBowl #blackout. They also were on top of the Royal Baby trend. They are clever enough to stick to their brand hashtags only. Your

3. Content Hashtags

These hashtags aren’t necessarily trending or popular, but rather common hashtags that are related to your post content. Content hashtags are good for your SEO Marketing Services. They get your updates seen by your consumers who are searching for, or using, the hashtag words. For example, at Cogniter, we use a lot of content hashtags like #socialmedia, #marketing or #content.

There are 4 major categories of common content hashtags:

Product hashtags

Lifestyle hashtags

Event hashtags

Location hashtags

Product hashtags connect both your product and your market. For example, if you own a pizza shop, post quality images of your best pizzas and use the #pizza, #foodie and #foodporn hashtags. This spreads the reach of your post and further connects with the people who have similar tastes and are a foodie.

Lifestyle hashtags are used for your target market. Think about their lifestyle and hobbies, then seek out popular hashtags to include in a few of your updates.

If your business is taking part in a local event or seminar, tell your social connections about it and spread the word by including the event hashtag in your post.

If you are a locally based business, you need to connect with your local customers. Use specific geo-targeted hashtags to get your business known in your city or a specific city you are targeting.
